Common AC Problems For Homeowners

Let’s face it. AC problems suck – especially during peak hot spells when you rely on your air conditioner to stay comfortably cool.

Many things can cause air conditioner problems, but let’s look at some of the most common issues that could be to blame.

AC Refrigerant Leaks

An air conditioner is low on refrigerant and won’t cool efficiently (or maybe at all). There could be two main reasons. First, the unit may have been undercharged with refrigerant when installed, or – more likely – it may have a refrigerant leak.

Refrigerant leaks are not uncommon, and they can be minimal. When they occur, it’s not enough to top up the refrigerant. You’ll need an AC repair technician to identify where the leaks are and seal them properly.

Electrical AC Problems

Could your air conditioner problem be as simple as a tripped breaker? If so, that’s an easy fix! However, if the breaker is being tripped regularly, it could sign a more significant issue. You should call a qualified tech if your AC is drawing too much power and blowing the circuit breaker.

Capacitors – which store and release energy to your air conditioner during peak usage – can fail, causing your AC to stop working or blow breakers.

Loose connections or stuck relays can also cause problems with your AC unit.

AC Thermostat Problems

If your thermostat has a problem, your air conditioner might not be getting the right instructions. As a result, your thermostat may need to be recalibrated or replaced.

Air Conditioner Problems from Inadequate Maintenance

Dirt and grime build up over time and can lead to AC problems.

When filters and condenser coils in an air conditioning unit become dirty, they will not operate properly. As a result, efficiency is compromised, and breakdowns are more likely than not.

Clogged AC drains

Your air conditioner removes moisture from the air and disposes it through drain lines. If they’re dirty or blocked, water can back up into your AC system. It could damage the unit or cause mold to accumulate.

One of the best ways to avoid air conditioner problems is to schedule routine maintenance, as recommended by the Energy Dept. Please find out more about our 22-point AC maintenance inspection, or get in touch today!
